Hana Lani Treehouses on Maui, Hawaii

Treehouses of Hana, Maui

I've actually stayed in one of these. It cost every bit as much as the condo we'd stayed in before and, although we were eaten alive by mosquitoes, I don't have any regrets at all!!! How often do you get to sleep in a treehouse in the jungles of Hawaii? These had a bit of a "Swiss Family Robinson" feel, with multiple levels and beds with mattresses. It was a rustic experiece - a bit like camping.

We took outdoor showers - which we loved. These even had outdoor restrooms.

There's something magical about a cabin set among tree branches. It excites adults and tempts children away from sedentary pursuits to a world of outdoor fantasy. Treehouses come in all shapes and sizes, from a simple deck in the sky to an elaborate complex of interconnecting structures far above the ground. They can be romantic, luxurious, or designed for entertaining friends. This engaging book contains some of the most interesting examples from around the world, and also features a wide range of interiors, designed for various functions. It's an invaluable source of lofty ideas for anyone contemplating a move up-into the trees.

Edisto River Treehouses in South Carolina

Paddle through gorgeous South Carolina to these treehouses

We were thinking about staying here on our upcoming anniversary trip but then we read that you'll probably see alligators as you kayak to the treehouses. Hmmmm...gators. Maybe we'll just stay at a hotel. But these look great with kitchens, futons, grills, and a deck.

Located in Canadys, South Carolina - approximately 90 minutes from Savannah, Georgia or Columbia & Charleston, South Carolina.

The Original Treehouse Cottages in Eureka Springs, Arkansas

These are upscale tree house accommodations and most cannot accommodate children. Treehouses without kids - how weird is that? But these have Heat/AC, kitchens, gas grills, and irons & ironing boards. Ironing boards!?! This might be a little too fancy-schmancy for the likes of me.

Treehouse Book - by Candda Collins

Treehouse Book
Treehouse Book
Other than a few pages at the back of the book nominally on how to build your own treehouse (including computer graphic visualizations!) this is a picture book, beautiful photography of about two dozen most impressive treehouses. From a high-tech hideaway through castles in the trees and a few modest rooms, there's a good range of treehouse pictures.

Tree House Trivia....

The Medici family (Renaissance era / Italy) commissioned opulent tree houses in their gardens near Florence, including one with a working fountain.

Cedar Creek Treehouse at Mt. Rainier, Washington

Here's another "No kids / No pets" treehouse in the Pacific Northwest but all you young lovers with Swiss Family Robinson or Tarzan fantasies can find fulfillment in this rather remarkable treehouse that's 50 feet up in a 200-year old Western Red Cedar tree in Washington. Al Gore can fly his private jet over to Washington and feel good about the fact that the lights in this treehouse are solar powered. There is a propane heater, gass stove, sink, and icebox. There's also a toilet in the bathroom but there isn't a shower. (The owner carries water up to the treehouse daily.) The setting is natural and beautiful.

One really impressive element here is the 80-foot spiral staircase you climb to get to get to the treehouse - it's pretty remarkable with each revolution around the tree taking you 8 feet closer to your goal. You can see photos on their website.

This treehouse comes with an treehouse observatory that is way, way, way up in the air that you reach via a Rainbow Bridge. You'll be singing "On a clear day...You can see forever..." from this vantage point. The Rainbow bridge is a suspension bridge that hangs on two cables about 90 feet above the round.

This treehouse has been featured in numerous magazines and television travel segments.

Rate: $300 per night with a two night minimum.

Treehouses - By Paula Henderson

Treehouses
Treehouses
As children's hideaways, ornamental garden features, spiritual retreats, and even as offices, studios, and full-time homes, treehouses provide places of isolation, independence, and imagination where one can literally rise above the demands of daily life. Here, architect Adam Mornement and historian Paula Henderson explore extraordinary aeries past and present, from the treehouse-dwelling tradition of South Sea hunter-gatherers to the Green Magic eco-treehouse resort in Kerala, India; from Normandy’s 400-year-old chapel-in-the-oak to the tree nests and tree tunnels that movie star John Malkovich created for his children; from treehouses in literature to the ecologically sustainable dwellings built from modern technology that will be the treehouses of tomorrow's world. Engaging, thoroughly researched, and packed with hundreds of fabulous photographs and illustrations, Treehouses is destined to become the classic reference work on this magical subject.

The Treehouse Suite at Fernie Castle

Amazing storybook treehouse in Fife, Scotland

Me and you and a tree house castle for two!

You really should check out the website - even if you never plan to sleep in a tree. This tree house is like something from a George McDonald book and is simply incredible! Better yet, it is on the grounds of the Fernie Castle Hotel, which is a real 450 year old castle. This beautiful tree house has a king bed, double doors, and a green claw foot bathtub!!!! It's whimsical and delightful and way better than staying at some stupid old luxury hotel. I'm pretty sure that this is where hobbits honeymoon....affluent hobbits because this castle in the sycamores will set you back 445.00 - 495.00 English pounds per night; you'll have to figure out the exchange rate yourself. But the rate does include a 1/2 bottle of Champagne (the Keebler elves drank the other half of the bottle whilst making cookies), chocolates, fruit, soft drinks, biscuits, Continental Breakfast, Breakfast Tea, Coffee, and dinner in The Fernie Castle. Sadly, I'm afraid this just isn't in my budget and I'll never know the joys of taking a bath in a green bathtub in the trees.

Dear Fernie Castle people,

Please don't hesitate to invite me to come spend a complimentary night in your tree house if you happen to notice that you're getting a lot of bookings due to this website. I promise not to joke about hobbits or Keebler elves while I'm there!

The Tree House at Highland Haven Creekside Inn in Evergreen, CO

"850 square feet of romantic luxury in the trees"

Here's another faux-treehouse -a bi-level suite built on stilts between two 60 foot blue spruces. If you can picture a miniature ski lodge from an upscale Colorado ski resort town nestled in the branches, you'll probably have a pretty accurate mental image of this structure - a look that the owners call "Colorado Chic".

Some of the finer points include:

* multi-colored glass chandelier over the king bed,

* custom iron and stone fireplace,

* a two person steam shower

* Petrified wood vanity sink in the bathroom

* Wet bar with teak root sink

* Antique staqined glass from a Denver mansion

* The tree house was built using sustainable materials and meets Energy Star's highest rating.

The Highland Haven Creekside Inn is located in Evergreen, Colorado which is nested in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies, 30 minutes west of Denver, and the tree house provides a lovely view of Bear Creek. A really fantastic breakfast is included with your stay. The Tree House is just one of the options here - you can also choose from cottages, Luxury Suites, Junior Suites, and Guest rooms.
